Arabic Calligraphy Practical workshop
Dr. Lev Arie Kapitaikin hosted Sami Qaq, an East Jerusalem artist and designer, for a practical Arabic Calligraphy workshop which took place at the end of 2023 – 2024 academic year.
Calligraphy is the beautiful art of writing, which is done using a quill (pen) or a dedicated brush. Arabic/Persian calligraphy appears on the walls of mosques, palaces, as well as in illustrations and pages. Calligraphy is an expression of the highest level of art in Islam – which provides a link between language and religion. Because the Koran was handed down to humanity in the Arabic language – the Arabic language and script are considered sacred.

The workshop was held as part of the EMI course: “Introduction to Islamic Art: Unity in Diversity” at the Unit for History and Philosophy of Art, Design and technology. It was made possible thanks to Shenkar International Center. Jewish, Arab and Druze students created spectacular calligraphy works with a nod to contemporary and traditional design.
