Gro-Tech Lab Course Conclusion

‘”

This week a first-of-its-kind, interdisciplinary and international course at Design Factory Shenkar came to an end. The course was a partnership between AgeLabIL Shenkar and four design factories from around the world. The course – which brought together an international consortium of lecturers and students from Korea, Colombia, Portugal, and Aalto University, Finland – examined the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3: Good Health and Well-being. The course was in collaboration with the Welfare Department in the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo.

During the course, led by Dr. Assaf Krebs and Keren Atkin, students met Arab women from the Jaffa Seniors Club and designed solutions for their day-to-day challenges. The theory section of the course included design and development methodologies taught by lecturers from Korea, Portugal, Finland, and Colombia. Throughout the semester, student groups from around the world attended online meetings in which they shared their projects and received feedback from lecturers. The final gala evening included dozens of presentations from project teams in front of lecturers and mentors from all over the world.

Among the products developed by the Shenkar students that came in for high praise were the ecological incontinence products made from a combination of hyssop and corn flour (Tamar Gazuz , Industrial Design; Jordan Azaguri , Department of Visual Communication)

Eco-Pad: The development of an ecological incontinence pad. The pad is made from different textile layers, including spongy moss and corn flour. The product comes with unique reusable underwear.

Other products included:

A social tablet for lonely elderly people (Alisa Zamikhovsky, Department of Interior, Building and Environment Design);

A product to assist elderly women who suffer from shaking hands to apply makeup (Chen Avraham and Yuval Asher, Department of Interior, Building and Environment Design);

an Arduino-powered combined bag and warming cushion for lower body pain (Eden Fried , Department of Fashion Design; Tzit Ofir  and Shachaf Chen , Department of Textile Design);

and an IOT-integrated cutting board (Or Ventura, Department of Industrial Design; Emily Viara , Department of Fashion Design).

A cutting board designed for the elderly population. The board integrates digital components, a social platform, and additional smart functions.
