Shenkar has partnerships with academic institutions from all over the world and forges international ties to benefit its students in a variety of ways, including student exchanges to help them broaden their horizons. As part of this vision, the college recently welcomed a delegation from the United Arab Emirates, led by the UAE’s deputy minister of education, professor Mohamed Baniyas, who arrived with additional representatives to investigate the possibility of a bilateral partnership.

The delegation was welcomed by the chairperson of Shenkar’s board of trustees, Ms. Orit Efrati, and the chairperson of the executive committee, Mr. Zvi Yemini. During the visit, Shenkar’s president, professor Sheizaf Rafaeli, talked about the college’s vision and the activities of Shenkar’s various faculties and departments. After this, professor Shmuel Kenig, vice president and director of the Research, Creativity & Development Authority, presented the Authority’s activities. Faculty deans professor Yoram Halevi and professor Yael Moria took the delegation on a tour of the college’s departments to give them a glimpse into the students’ unique activities.

The delegation’s members were very happy to talk with the students, who were working on various models for their studies. As a token of appreciation, each of the delegation’s representatives received a unique personal gift designed and created by Department of Textile Design graduate Maayan Gutfeld.

Later, the delegation toured the Digital Game Design and Development lab and the Michal and Avraham Kadar Center for Design and Technology, where a discussion was held about Shenkar’s uniquely multidisciplinary study program and its projects that integrate design and engineering. Among these are Shenkar’s True Experience Program (STEP), a curriculum of courses that include practical experience (run by Roei Zerahia); the International Office (run by Dr. Yael Pedro); Design Factory (run by Dr. Assaf Krebs and Dr. Yigal David); and the Center for Innovation ACT Shenkar (run by Daniel Altman).

The delegation’s members were impressed upon finding out that the typographic sculpture at the entrance to Israel’s pavilion at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, featuring a mixed Hebrew-Arabic script spelling out the words “Toward Tomorrow”, was designed by Department of Visual Communication graduate Liron Lavi Turkenich.

The delegation summed up the successful visit as the beginning of a wonderful friendship between institutions, with great potential for a range of collaborations. They emphasized their desire to take an active part in Shenkar’s unique Jam Week, send students to participate in Shenkar’s annual National Hackathon, and become partners in research projects in areas of interest to both Israel and the UAE.
