New: Industrial Design Program with a Specialty in Design Review and Polymer Materials Engineering

The connection between industrial design and the technological knowledge of materials engineering is extremely valuable and has already been integrated in advanced work environments today. This new track in the Department of Industrial Design, which opened in the 2022/23 academic year alongside a parallel track in the Department of Polymer Materials Engineering, trains graduates for the work environments of the future and contributes to processes of development and innovation in a range of fields.

The track, which offers a specialty in design review and polymer materials engineering, is the first implementation of our vision for full collaboration in a bachelor’s degree program offered jointly by Shenkar’s engineering and design faculties.

The course of study aims to familiarize students with the principles of design thinking and activity and the processes of product development, with an emphasis on innovation and a holistic approach to the needs of users and the environment, along with an in-depth understanding of design patterns, design review, and materials.

Students accepted to the course of studies will be from within the Department of Industrial Design and take the department’s core courses. Alongside their comprehensive industrial design training, a quarter of the curriculum will consist of specialized courses in the Department of Polymer Materials Engineering.

The track is intended for highly capable and motivated students who wish to become uniquely specialized professionals upon graduation. They must successfully complete the meticulous admissions process of the Department of Industrial Design and meet the conditions of acceptance to the Pernick Faculty of Engineering. Those who are successful will benefit from integrated training that will make them among the most sought-after graduates in the job market.

Specialized learning frameworks will be developed for students in the new track, integrating lab courses jointly run by both departments and conducted in collaboration with industry partners; theoretical classes in science and materials engineering; elective classes about design review and product design; and guest lectures, workshops, factory tours, and introductions to various manufacturing processes.

In the first and second years, students will take specialized basic courses that are created and adapted for them by the department. In the third year, students will participate in studio courses run jointly by both departments, in collaboration with industry bodies. In the fourth year, students will be able to collaborate in interdepartmental groups on a joint graduate project and/or work under the supervision of senior lecturers from both departments.
