Roles of External Lecturers  

The role of external lecturers includes the following: 

  • Preparing the academic content of the course.
  • Teaching the courses.
  • Responding to student inquiries and receiving students. 
  • Grading assignments and exercises, preparing exam papers, attending all exam/submission dates, grading exams/submissions, submitting grades by the due dates as set out in the Shenkar Academic Regulations, participating in staff meetings, conferences and department meetings.

Salary

  • Salary for external lecturers will be aligned with the approved salary charts published by the Planning and Budgeting Committee (VATAT).  
  • Staff salaries for a given month will be paid by the 9th of the following month.
  • One teaching unit is equivalent to one in-person/studio lecture hour.
  • One exercise/lab teaching hour will be counted as 0.7 teaching units per hour.
  • Teaching hours in technical support or weekly supervision for graduate projects will count as 0.5 teaching units per hour.

Benefits

  • Pension : As detailed in the Special Collective Bargaining Agreement /  Accompanying Agreements (see links above). Pension contributions will be submitted after six months in the position. 
    Should the lecturer already have some form of pension cover, they will be entitled to contributions from their first day of work, subject to provision of proof of an existing active pension/executive insurance policy (an active policy is one with contributions within the five months previous to taking up the position at Shenkar). These contributions will begin after three months of work and will be backdated to cover the period from the starting date.
  • Convalescence pay: This shall be paid to external lecturers on the basis of expansion decrees that are introduced periodically, and relative to the scope of their position.

Commuting Allowance

  • Lecturers are entitled to reimbursement of commuting expenses, pursuant to instructions of the Ministry of Finance’s accountant general and the implementation of the public transportation “Equal Commute Reform” that came into force on August 1, 2022.
  • Payment for commuting time will be covered only in cases where the travelling distance exceeds 60 km in each direction. Each block of 60 km will be considered an hour’s journey and the payment for this time will not exceed 15% of the rate for a teaching unit. The employee is responsible for providing information regarding their travel distance from home to Shenkar. Only a photocopied ID card will be considered valid for these purposes.

Vacation 

  • External lecturers are entitled to vacation days as set out in law.
  • Vacation days must be expended during breaks in the academic schedule, during semester/summer breaks.

Sick Leave

  • External lecturers are entitled to sick leave pursuant to the Sick Pay Law — 1976, adjusted for the scope of their position.
  • It is hereby clarified that unused sick days cannot be redeemed either during the employment period or after it.

Maternity Leave

  • By the time an associate faculty member is five months pregnant, she must report this to the department and academic secretariat.
  • She is entitled to maternity leave according to accruement of a qualifying period. During this period, the National Insurance Institute will transfer payment of the maternity allowance.
  • Eligibility for maternity pay is determined according to National Insurance Institute standards that can be found on their website.
  • As of May 1, 1998, fathers are eligible to exchange part of their partner’s maternity leave for paternity leave and receive benefits  under the law.
  • Maternity leave is also offered in other circumstances as specified on the National Insurance Institute website.

Updating Personal Details 

Any changes to personal details must be reported to the primary department and the Academic Secretariat, such as a change in residence, email address, phone number, etc.
