The Student Advancement Center (HILA) offers eligible students a range of support options, including mentorship during the school year, as well as the chance to participate in small study groups — support and assistance that have proven to be effective and improve academic success.
Year-long mentoring
The center operates in coordination with the Dean of Students and PERACH and offers eligible students a range of support options, including mentorship throughout the school year.
- The arrangement entails about 2-4 hours per week.
- The mentors are outstanding upper-year students, who receive a scholarship or credits in exchange for mentoring.
- The mentee and mentor are supported by the center’s staff throughout the year, who respond to needs that arise.
Important information:
- The mentorship is a binding commitment for the mentor and student, and participants are carefully selected. Mentorships cannot be canceled during the year, so a student requesting one is committed to a full academic year and the entire quota of hours.
- It is not possible to stop or change a mentorship that has begun.
- The number of mentors is limited, so it is recommended to register as soon as possible! Establishing a mentorship is conditional upon, among other things, finding a mentor from the same field as the mentee. Due to these limitations, it is not always possible to fulfill every request.
Mentoring via “tutoring lessons”
- At HILA, students eligible for support options can receive tutoring lessons from outstanding upper-year students. This is not continuous assistance but rather is focused on a specific difficulty. The hours allocated to each student are limited and determined by the center’s staff according to needs and tutors’ availability. Bear in mind that the process may take time and depend upon, among other things, finding suitable students within the requested field and at the required level.
Important information:
- Towards the end of the semester, it is very difficult to recruit students willing to tutor. Therefore, we recommend applying for help as early as possible and not delay seeking help until the end of the semester.
- Exceeding the tutoring hours quota requires express permission from the center’s staff.
Study groups
For students eligible for support, along with individual assistance, we also offer the option of participating in small study groups in core engineering courses. The study groups are led by top teachers’ aides, for a nominal fee. The study groups and registration dates will be announced at the beginning of each semester.
Important information:
- The number of spaces in the study groups is limited.
- Priority will be given to students not receiving other educational assistance within the center, to low-achieving students, and to students with severe learning disabilities/limitations.
Attendance at all study group meetings is mandatory for participants.
