Shenkar supports making higher education accessible to Arab society. Through the Ma’an Unit, we offer support for students from Arab society during their time at Shenkar and after graduation.
Shenkar’s Unit for Students from Arab Society operates within the Dean of Students office.
Unit goals: Raising awareness of Shenkar’s academic offerings, facilitating a smooth entry into first-year studies, offering social and academic guidance, creating a common space of dialog and reciprocity, and supporting students throughout their college studies and finding a suitable position in their field.
Unit activities:
- Guidance and assistance before starting studies at Shenkar
Preparatory Program for Art and Design: for candidates wishing to study art and design at academic institutions of higher education. The preparatory program’s purpose is to train candidates to fulfill admission requirements for a bachelor’s degree in art and design. The program offers cultural content, skills, and practical tools in art and design.
- Guidance and support between admission and starting studies
One Step Ahead Program: a unique program designed for candidates who met admission requirements and were accepted as regular design, art and engineering degree students at Shenkar. The program takes place during the summer semester, before beginning studies, and includes first-year academic courses. The program’s purpose is to enable a smooth start to the first year, reduce educational gaps, impart learning skills and reduce the expected load. Upper-year students guide the new students in the program, serving as supportive social mentors and helping them adapt to academic life.
- Continued academic/social/emotional support and guidance throughout the years of study
Intake program in academia: The Unit provides a four-year support program throughout the degree, from start to finish. This program includes individual academic guidance and practice, educational mentoring, social activities, emotional support and comprehensive social mentoring from year 1, for students in all departments.
- Guidance on transitioning from school to work
Career Center: We support students throughout their school years and after. The Career Center, in cooperation with “Aluma”, works with “The Next Step” project, through which students participate in a 120-hour internship course, gaining practical experience and the opportunity to find a job where they are interning. In addition, the Career Center offers career courses throughout the year, marathon days and participates in Student Union job fairs.
External relations: The Unit maintains relationships with organizations outside Shenkar, such as Arab municipalities and nonprofits. For example — the Merhav Me’afsher and Nitzanei Shenkar projects with the Taibe and Nahef municipalities, and an upcoming project with a social organization from Jisr az-Zarqa.
