Academic Freedom

Shenkar recognizes the unfettered right of its faculty members to full academic freedom in all their academic endeavors.

Shenkar encourages academic freedom — the basis for its existence as an open institute for teaching, research, creativity and innovation. Academic freedom aims to enable research and teaching that seeks scientific truth, independently, without fear and without bias.

Freedom of expression, freedom of creativity, freedom of thought and critique are basic values that we are committed to, both individually and as an institution. Shenkar respects the right of its faculty members to liberty and freedom of thought, conscience, religion, expression, gathering, unionizing and movement.

Academic freedom exists hand-in-hand with academic responsibility, without which full and free academic life is impossible.  It does not extend to incitement to violence or hatred on the basis of race, religion, nationality, ethnic group, gender or sexual orientation.

Academic freedom in institutions of higher education in Israel is anchored in the Council for Higher Education Law 5718-1958. Section 15, “Freedom of Action”, determines that:  A recognized institution is free to support its own academic and administrative interests, within its budget, as it sees fit.”
