Shenkar — Engineering. Design. Art. views fostering gender equality as a core value. The college takes several approaches to ensure equality, diversity and academic excellence:

Increasing the percentage of women among the academic faculty and managerial staff

  • Shenkar encourages and values initiatives that support women. We work to increase the percentage of women who serve as department heads and directors of research institutes and units, and likewise in senior management positions.
  • Shenkar works to recruit women for the various committees active in the institution. Furthermore, we make every effort to hire and promote female faculty members.
  • Transparency of information on gender equality and fairness:  Our gender statistics appear on Shenkar’s website on a dedicated page.

Throughout the year, we run activities that promote female students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) subjects.

Shenkar — Engineering. Design. Art. has done extensive work on this issue through numerous channels:

  1. Establishing the ProWoman club: This is a club for female students at Shenkar who strive to become managers, entrepreneurs and influential figures in economics, tech, government and social action in the Israeli economy and wider society. The program consists of weekly meetings with leading women in senior positions of influence in all fields of the Israeli economy. 
  2. A five-year plan was approved in the framework of an invitation to tender from the Council for Higher Education (CHE) — the “Kav Mashve” program.

In the framework of this proposal, we seek to advance research among female faculty members in several areas:

  • Advancing and encouraging female faculty members’ research, especially multidisciplinary research.
  • Fostering and encouraging female students to pursue advanced academic studies and enabling them to gain experience in research and development.

Additionally, the Kav Mashve program seeks to:

  • Encourage the creation of content about different aspects of gender equality.
  • Hold workshops for empowering female researchers, encouraging research and academic writing.
  • Raise awareness about gender equality at Shenkar.

3. From 2017-2019, we sent delegations of students to an annual conference for women (Women Economic Forum) in Delhi, India. There they met with female entrepreneurs and pioneering women from all over the world. If flights to India are renewed, we would be interested in continuing to take part in this type of activity.

4. In the framework of the various programs, we also run multidisciplinary programs to generate interest in these fields among different sectors, women in particular.

5. To mark International Women’s Day, we held a seminar for the women of Shenkar featuring two lectures: The first by author and poet Dr. Maya Tevet Dayan on the topic of feminism today; and the second by Dr. Yael Lahav, who told her personal story of overcoming a health crisis and coping with prolonged uncertainty.

6. In September 2023, we held a workshop for female researchers at Shenkar about leadership in academia, research vision and initiative, and research collaborations, in conjunction with international facilitators Dr. Sue Hewitt and Dr. Irene Nagel from hfp consulting. As part of the two-day workshop, we visited “Nurah’s Kitchen” in Daliyat al-Karmel and “The Windmill” in Kibbutz Sha’ar HaAmakim.

7. As in previous years, this year we ran the ProWomen program, which brings together female students and inspiring women in senior positions of influence.

Prof. Nira Pereg and Dr. Meira Levy are also part of a forum of consultants working in numerous colleges to address the issue of gender on a national level in partnership with the CHE.
