Roles of Teaching Fellows
The role of teaching fellow includes the following undertakings:
- Preparing the academic content of the course.
- Teaching the courses.
- Responding to student inquiries and receiving students.
- Grading assignments and exercises, preparing exam papers, attending all exam/submission dates, grading exams/submissions, submitting grades by the due dates as set out in the Shenkar Academic Regulations, participating in staff meetings, conferences and department meetings.
Appointment Period
- For a one-semester appointment (first or second semester), the employment period will be six months.
- For a two-semester appointment (first and second semester), the employment period will be twelve months.
Science Liaison Fund (KAKAM) / Continued Training
The Science Liaison Fund (KAKAM) is designed to enable teaching fellows to broaden their professional horizons and advance in teaching and research. The budget is not cumulative from year to year and is not a personal benefit for the teaching fellow.
Academic criteria for approving requests by lecturers:
- Further academic training in the lecturer’s area of expertise.
- Participation in a professional convention, course or exhibit, as a Shenkar representative.
- Further training at an institute of study or research.
Submission of an application for continued training is done via the KAKAM form:
- The application must be submitted at the earliest possible opportunity and no less than two weeks before the intended travel date to avoid delays in approval.
- When submitting the form, please ensure that all details are complete and that the following information appears in full:
>> Travel dates: Please ensure that the travel dates are correct and precise, based on current flight information. If dates have changed, contact the academic secretariat and update the dates to ensure receipt of a corrected letter.
>> Precise travel destination.
>> Purpose of the travel and detailed daily travel itinerary, including documents and references.
>> Amount requested for each section.
>> Return date from most recent Shenkar-funded travel (from any budget source).
>> Arrangements to prevent disruption of work responsibilities.
>> Indication if a family member is joining the trip.
>> Original signature of person submitting the form + submission date.
>> Signature of the department head/direct supervisor (even for travel by department heads). - After the form is completed and signed, it must be sent to the academic secretariat for review by the authorized academic and administrative entities.
- If inappropriate or incomplete forms are submitted, they will be returned to the faculty member for completion of all the necessary details.
- If changes occur in travel plans after approval of the travel by the committee, contact and update the academic secretariat to ensure receipt of a corrected letter.
- No later than two weeks following the travel return date, a detailed academic report describing the training activities must be submitted to the academic secretariat.
- According to income tax requirements, the travel report should include itemization on a daily and even hourly level, if possible.
- For accounting purposes, bring original invoices and/or receipts for travel expenses abroad in your name only. Make all payments with your credit card only and not one belonging to a spouse/family member/third party.
- The accounting calculations will be possible only upon presentation of a boarding pass in the passenger’s name.
Salary
- Salary for external lecturers will be aligned with the approved salary charts published by the Planning and Budgeting Committee (VATAT).
- A full-time position for teaching fellows is 14 teaching hours.
- A teaching unit is equal in value to one in-person/studio lecture hour.
- One exercise/lab teaching hour will be counted as 0.7 teaching units per hour.
- Teaching hours in technical support or weekly supervision for graduate projects will count as 0.5 teaching units per hour.
Benefit Terms
- Pension fund: Shenkar will make contributions and deduct payments for the benefit of the pension fund/management insurance identified and chosen by the teaching fellow.
- Continuing education fund: Shenkar will make contributions and deduct payments at the rates detailed in the Special Collective Bargaining Agreement into the continuing education fund chosen by the teaching fellow.
- Convalescence: Teaching fellows are entitled to convalescence pay, as customary in civil service, according to occasional updates and in proportion to the position’s scope and accumulated seniority.
Commuting Allowance
Lecturers are entitled to reimbursement of commuting expenses, pursuant to instructions of the Ministry of Finance’s accountant general and the implementation of the public transportation “Equal Commute Reform” that came into force on August 1, 2022.
Vacation
Teaching fellows are entitled to vacation during the semester breaks, summer break and all days of the Sukkot and Passover holidays. At these times, they will be free from teaching and other academic responsibilities.
Sick Leave
- Teaching fellows are entitled to sick leave as outlined in the law.
- The above notwithstanding, a teaching fellow will be eligible to payment of full sick leave (100%) beginning from the first day of illness, upon presentation of a doctor’s note to the Academic Faculty Division.
Maternity Leave
- By the time a teaching fellow is five months pregnant, she must report this to the department and academic secretariat.
- She is entitled to maternity leave according to accruement of a qualifying period. During this period, the National Insurance Institute will transfer payment of the maternity allowance.
- Eligibility for maternity pay is determined according to National Insurance Institute standards that can be found on their website.
- As of May 1, 1998, fathers are eligible to exchange part of their partner’s maternity leave for paternity leave and receive benefits under the law.
- Maternity leave is also offered in other circumstances as specified on the National Insurance Institute website.
Updating Personal Details
Any changes to personal details must be reported to the primary department and the Academic Faculty Division, such as a change in residence, email address, phone number, etc.
