About the Pernick Faculty of Engineering

The past 30 years could reasonably be considered a golden age of engineering. Tech companies, from large enterprises to small startups, are the backbone of the global economy and even more so the Israeli economy.

The fact that those heading these same companies, in many cases the actual founders, hold degrees in engineering and science may seem natural to us today; but this was not always the case. We are all familiar with the advances in computing and electronics in our daily lives, but similar phenomena are occurring in other fields of engineering as well.

Consider sustainability, for instance — perhaps the most important field of science and engineering of the 21st century. Awareness and personal responsibility are unquestionably important, but the large-scale, systemic solutions are as a result of engineering developments such as facilities for solar and wind power, easily recyclable materials, and product lifecycle management. This is also true for life sciences, materials science, pharmaceuticals, water and, of course, the autonomous vehicle; all central subjects in the various curricula at Shenkar’s Faculty of Engineering.

Engineering has been taught at Shenkar since the day of its establishment in 1970, and the Pernick Faculty of Engineering is the oldest engineering faculty in Israel.

The faculty contains five bachelor’s degree units: the School of Industrial Engineering & Management, the Department of Polymer Materials Engineering, the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, the  Department of Chemical Engineering, the Department of Software Engineering, and the Core Studies Unit, which is responsible for teaching mathematics and physics. The faculty also has two master’s degree programs: the master’s in polymer materials engineering, with and without a thesis, and the School of Industrial Engineering & Management. Additional advanced degree programs are currently in the process of being approved.

The engineering studies in each of the units are designed to equip students with extensive theoretical and practical knowledge, independence, collaboration skills and an entrepreneurial approach. The faculty even encourages students to dip their toes into the labor market as part of their studies. We offer opportunities for placement in leading companies in the industry as part of Shenkar’s unique STEP program, which combines internship with academic support and is open to all students in the later years of their degree.

In addition to classic training for high-level engineers who are ready to work in leading companies, both small and large, the curricula in each of the faculty’s departments includes subjects unique in their fields — subjects in which we are national and global leaders. The Department of Chemical Engineering, for example, offers a sustainability major that focuses on water, and additional majors in medical and cosmetic materials; students can study lighting in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, intelligence and digital gaming in the Department of Software Engineering, and fashion management and intra-organizational entrepreneurship in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management; and the Department of Polymer Materials Engineering is the country’s leading knowledge center for the development, application and recycling of such materials. In unique subjects such as these, Shenkar alumni have a significant advantage over the graduates of other institutions.

The faculty’s core approach is that researchers who are engaged in current research are in a better position to teach the material in a manner best suited to the pace of technological development. Research, in all its forms, is a major part of the work of faculty members in the Pernick Faculty of Engineering. Our researchers publish in first-rate professional journals and are members of national and international research groups.

One last word for potential students: We invite you to join us at Shenkar for a fascinating journey that begins with engineering studies and continues to a career that is fulfilling and rewarding, contributing to a better society, state and world.
