Dr. Michal Chacham

Social and cultural researcher, engaged in issues related to the structuring of space and identity in Israeli culture; teaches in the Cultural Studies Unit.

Chacham has a Ph.D. from the School of Cultural Studies, Tel Aviv University, prior to which she earned her MA, summa Cum Laude, from the Department of Literary Theory at the University and her BA in Art Education from the University of Leeds. She also holds a B.Ds from the Department of Fashion Design at Shenkar.

Chacham's research focuses on the formulation of the Jewish-Zionist Culture in Palestine during the settlement [Yishuv] and the early days of the State of Israel, from a sociocultural-historical perspective She examines the ideological mechanisms (institutional and cultural) that molded the daily life of the Jewish population during this period, while simultaneously molding the perception of space and the collective cultural identity and memory of the national community.

She teaches a variety of courses in the Cultural Studies Unit at Shenkar with a multidisciplinary approach, including: Israeli Visual Culture, Sociology of Art and Culture, Interpretation and Criticism of Visual Culture and the History of Museums and Curation, and in addition, has supervised theorical final projects.
