Purpose
- Maintaining the health of Shenkar students, employees and researchers.
- Prevention of health risks, poisoning, fire and any potential HAZMAT events.
- Prevention of environmental damage.
Method
- Any student submitting a proposal to conduct research that includes working in Shenkar’s laboratories — chemistry laboratories, lasers, design laboratories, etc. — must submit a plan specifying the intended materials and methods.
- For chemistry experiments in the departments of chemical engineering and polymer materials engineering — the experiment plan(s) that the student would perform must be submitted (See attached form). In this form, materials needed for the experiments must be listed in detail, and any experimental processes involving heat/fire must be indicated.
- After the materials list, methods, and the measures necessary to conduct the research are submitted to the safety officer, s/he will approve the request with a signature and attach a safety procedure for conducting the experiment.
- The student must give advance notice before beginning the experiment, in order to perform a safety check and obtain written permission to conduct the experiment.
- Responsibility for ongoing safety maintenance in the laboratory rests with the laboratory supervisor and instructor. Do not work alone in the laboratory, make sure that two employees / students are present during experiments.
- Use of hazardous and toxic materials requires prior submission of MSDSs for the chemical substances the student will use. For a list of hazardous materials click here!
- Glassware must be undamaged and without defects.
- Distillation processes require the presence of an instructor/facilitator.
- Treatment of chemical waste: After the experiments, any remaining chemical waste must be collected in designated containers located in the laboratory, taking care to separate organic and inorganic substances and oxidizing agents from potential reactants.
- Personal protective equipment: Each student, instructor and assistant must wear a long lab coat with long sleeves, appropriate gloves and goggles/face shield.
- These instructions are in addition to the Shenkar laboratory safety instructions.
