Variety, Freedom of Choice, Skill Development

We believe that the best way to teach art is by offering an open, flexible learning program, customized to our students’ creative interests. Therefore, the Shenkar School of Art undergraduate curriculum is based on three core values:

  • Variety: An abundance of courses, fields and tools.
  • Freedom of choice: The school environment offers a wealth of resources, within which students may explore, learn and chart their own path.
  • Skill development: The school is committed to improving students’ practical skills. Our graduates leave with an understanding of classic techniques, software and modern technologies — as well as a dynamic, bold mindset.

Art can take many different forms. The array of courses we offer enables our students to learn in a range of ways and to equip themselves with a variety of skills that will serve them well in real life:

  1. Artistic Medium Courses

A large portion of the course offerings are dedicated to different mediums. Along with comprehensive courses in traditional fields such as sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and printmaking, we also offer courses in emerging and developing fields such as performance, sound art and digital art.

  1. Subject-Specific Courses

These courses revolve around a subject, rather than an art medium. What does that mean? Students work side by side in the same course, drawing, sculpting, printmaking, picture-taking and presenting, while focused on the same subject. You can find, among other things, courses about memorials, color, animals or the sea.

  1. Open Courses

Students direct their own learning in these courses. This learning method is used in European art schools, where the creative process takes the place of traditional content dissemination. Rather than presenting content or structured exercises, the lecturer facilitates the students’ creative work processes.

  1. Interdepartmental courses

These are joint courses with other departments. Students and lecturers from two separate departments participate in these courses on issues that overlap between art and adjacent departments.

  1. Technique workshops

Workshops focus on specific tools, techniques and skills. There are two types — manual techniques workshops and software workshops. Through workshops, students are introduced to the abundance of practical skills surrounding art — from wood carving, taxidermy, watercolors and carpet weaving, to Blender, Unity and video mapping.

You are welcome to leaf through our newsletter, familiarize yourself with our courses and begin imagining and designing your perfect study program.
