This department aims to train students with the design skills for integrating materials, technologies and product development, and the ability to think and express themselves in a contemporary visual concept.
The borders of the printing, weaving and knitting professions are constantly being stretched, studied and examined in the department. The core topics include surface design, the border between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, soft materials, non-woven, fibers, smart cloths, dynamic materials and new geometries. Work on these topics, together with acquired skills in visual imaging, enables graduates of the department to design textile surfaces, theater sets and costumes.
Graduates of the department work in the advanced textile industries in Israel and the world (export, design and supervision) and also find their place in interactive design development with fields of science, product design, architecture and fashion, from the conceptual stage through implementation and manufacture. The designers who graduate from the department acquire the tools for working at a design studio or as independent designers.
In studio lessons, conceptual workshops, academic studies and practical workshops, students study the design professions, and learn about experimentation in contemporary design work.
The individual study program selected by the students is charted through personal guidance in studio work and individual studies in technology laboratories, as well as lectures, seminars and tours. The student can choose from a range of elective courses and multidisciplinary projects and classes. The department offers up-to-date computer and software systems and well-equipped workshops. The Design Faculty’s other workshops are also available for the student’s personal use or for use in the framework of interdepartmental studies within Shenkar.
